Relative to other disciplines, sociology has relatively neglected the study of home so far. Why is that, and what is the potential contribution of this disciplinary background? In addressing these questions, Paolo Boccagni and Margarethe Kusenbach have recently edited a Special Issue of ISA’s Journal Current Sociology (68)5, 2020, Toward a sociology of home and homemaking. The volume provides a thorough critical discussion of the promises and prospects for a sociologically based study of home. It includes original contributions from Kim and Smets, Steigemann and Misselwitz, Basso, Ciasci and Akesson, Pechurina, Cheshire and ten Have, and Vandenbeld Giles. Moreover, the editors’ introduction, For a comparative sociology of home, gives a conceptual overview of this emerging field of sociological and interdisciplinary research. More conversations to follow among fellows sociologists, and beyond!
