The production of homeliness: inside and outside the logic of generalized domestication

Ghassan Hage (University of Melbourne)

Generalised Domestication, as I argue in Is Racism an Environmental Threat? (2017), and as the etymology of domestication indicates, involves a fusion of the logic of the domus and the logic of the dominus. It points to a mode of existence where homeliness and domination, which might appear to begin with as involving antagonistic practices and affects, are intertwined. But can the logic of home-building be reduced to a form of domestication or does it involve different modes of existence that lie outside the logic of domestication?
