Migrant hometown associations (HTAs) and local development in Mali & Senegal
Prof. Flore GUBERT (DIAL, Paris)
The presentation will first describe Malian and Senegalese migrants’ associations in destination countries (with a focus on France and Italy to a lesser extent). It will then describe the results of a research project aimed at assessing the impact of HTAs on the provision of local public goods in Mali. The data collection process will be presented in details because we had to construct from scratch a database on HTAs on the one hand, and on local public goods on the other hand. The presentation will end with a quick overview of a companion project, based on a multi-sited ethnographic survey conducted both among members of HTAs in France, and localities of origin in Senegal.
